HOISTS<\/h2>\n

A hoist is a device used for lifting or lowering a load by means of a drum or lift-wheel around which rope or chain
\nwraps. Cranes and Hoists are somewhat interchangeable terminology since the actual lifting mechanism of a crane is
\ncommonly referred to as a hoist. Hoists may be integral to a crane or mounted in affixed position, permanently or
\ntemporarily. When a hoist is mounted to a trolley on a fixed monorail, two directions of load motion are
\navailable: forward or reverse, up or down. When the hoist is mounted on a crane, three directions of load
\nmotion are available: right or left, forward or reverse, up or down. Figure below shows a rope hoist for
\ndouble girder crane application.

\nThe majority of hoists used in the United States are classified as Standard or \u201cpackaged hoists\u201d, typically
\ndefined as largely self contained units, prepared to be installed on existing structures.<\/p>\n

Hoist Lifting Media<\/h3>\n

There are two basic hoist lifting media – polipasto de cable<\/a><\/span> which is very durable and will provide long term,
\nreliable usage and the other type of hoist is the Chain Hoist.<\/p>\n

For a given rated load, wire rope is of lighter weight per running foot but is limited to drum diameters far
\nlarge than the lift wheel over which chain may function. Therefore a high-performance chain hoist may be
\nof significantly smaller physical size than a wire rope hoist rated at the same working load. High speed
\nlifting (60 ft\/min +) requires wire rope over a drum because chain over a pocket wheel generates fatigue
\ninducing resonance for long lifts.<\/p>\n

Which hoist is better \u2013 Chain hoist or Wire Rope hoist<\/h3>\n

Chain Hoist<\/h4>\n

Chain hoists are used for lower capacity, lighter duty applications and for projects in which cost is a
\nprimary deciding factor. Chain hoists are mainly used for maintenance tasks. The main reasons for
\nchoosing a chain hoist are the following:
\n1) Possible to change height of lift by changing the chain (versatile)
\n2) Compact design (no drum, which saves space)
\n3) Portable and can tolerate greater levels of abuse
\n4) Usually more economical than a wire rope hoist
\n5) Provide true vertical lift at no extra cost
\n6) Capacity up to 5 tons (up to 20 tons for some makes)
\nChain hoists do, however, have certain inherent inconveniences, such as
\n1) Limited lifting speed
\n2) Noisier operation than a wire rope hoist
\n3) May be problematic at a height of lift of over 20ft (6 meters)
\n4) Space taken by the chain or chain container<\/p>\n

The wire rope is a piece of equipment that is used mainly for production tasks. The main reasons for
\nchoosing a wire rope hoist are the following:
\n1) Very fast lifting speeds than a chain hoist
\n2) Quieter than a chain hoist
\n3) No room taken up by chain or chain receptacle
\n4) Recommended for considerable long lifting height
\n5) Very smooth lifting operation such as handle glass panel
\n6) Heavy Safe Working Load up to 25 tons
\nBoth wire rope and chain hoists available in market today are rugged and durable products. A good load
\nchain can lasts up to 30 times longer than standard wire rope, it greatly reduces the down time and \u00a0operational costs. Duty ratings stated in various standards (HMI\/DIN \/ FEM) are a better indicator of the
\ndurability of hoist type (chain or wire rope). Therefore, when purchasing a crane, focus on lifting speeds,
\nheadroom and features, less on the type of hoist.<\/p>\n

Three methods of applying power for overhead hoists:
\n1) Manual \u2013 By hand Chain
\n2) Electric – The most common power source application
\n3) Pneumatic – Often required in applications of high speed, higher duty cycle involving rapid, repetitive
\ntasks or hazardous areas where electric power is inadvisable.<\/p>\n

HOIST SELECTION FACTORS<\/h3>\n

To select the proper hoist, consider:<\/p>\n

1) The weight of the load to be lifted including below-the-hook lifting,
\nload supporting, and positioning devices.
\n2) Physical size of the load.<\/p>\n
