When specifying lifting equipment for a cleanroom environment, you cannot simply take a standard steel gantry crane, replace the steel with aluminium, and call it a day. Cleanroom lifting brings together several practical requirements: material selection, surface treatment, available space, mobility, structural strength, and the configuration of the electric hoist.

That was the engineering challenge behind one of our recent projects at Yuantai Crane. We designed, manufactured, and delivered a 2 ton adjustable aluminium gantry crane equipped with a European electric chain hoist for a customer in the Netherlands.

The project shows how a portable and adjustable gantry crane can provide a practical lifting solution when a permanent overhead crane or runway system is not suitable for the facility.

The aluminum alloy gantry crane is also fitted with non-marking polyurethane casters, making it easier to move across the customer’s working area while helping protect the floor surface.

Why Aluminium Alloy Makes Sense for Cleanroom Lifting

Cleanroom lifting is different from conventional material handling in a workshop. Equipment may need to operate around production machinery, pass through restricted areas, or be moved and stored when it is not in use. At the same time, surfaces need to be easy to clean and maintain.

For this application, we selected 6005-T5 aluminium alloy for the main gantry frame. The aluminium profiles have a specified tensile strength of 260 N/mm², providing the structural performance required for this 2 ton lifting application while keeping the crane relatively lightweight.

Surface treatment was another important part of the design. Instead of a conventional painted finish, the aluminium profiles were treated by anodic oxidation, with a film thickness of 10 μm. This gives the frame a durable surface with improved corrosion resistance and makes it easier to clean and maintain. It also avoids some of the surface maintenance concerns associated with painted steel structures.

For an aluminium portable gantry crane used in a controlled environment, these details are just as important as the rated lifting capacity.

Adjustable Height for Different Working Conditions

A major requirement for this project was the ability to adjust the crane height. The portable gantry provides a working lifting height from 1.8 m to 2.8 m, allowing the customer to adapt the crane to different lifting positions and surrounding equipment.

This can be particularly useful in facilities where ceiling height, door openings, pipelines, ventilation systems, or production equipment limit the available working space.

The adjustable structure allows the crane to be configured according to the actual lifting task rather than being restricted to one fixed height. For example, the 2 ton gantry crane can be set at a lower position when moving through areas with limited clearance and adjusted to a higher position when additional hook height is needed for equipment installation or maintenance.

This is one of the main advantages of an adjustable aluminium gantry crane: the same lifting equipment can serve different work areas without requiring a permanent modification to the building.

Foldable Frame Structure Makes the Crane Easier to Store and Move

Adjustability improves flexibility during operation, while the foldable frame makes the crane more convenient when it is not being used.

For this project, we supplied a foldable aluminium gantry crane that can be folded for transportation and storage. This is particularly useful where floor space is limited or where the lifting equipment needs to be moved between different working areas.

The crane uses manual travel, allowing operators to reposition it without a separate powered travelling system. The non-marking polyurethane casters provide smooth movement while helping to protect the floor surface.

For maintenance and installation work, this configuration keeps the equipment simple and practical: move the small gantry crane into position, complete the lifting task, and move it away when the work is finished.

Integrated European Electric Chain Hoist System

The gantry frame was only one part of the solution. We also needed to select a 2 ton electric chain hoist that matched the customer’s lifting requirements and available power supply.

For this project, we supplied a European electric chain hoist with dual-speed lifting and variable-speed trolley travel.

  • The hoist provides a lifting speed of 0.4 / 3.4 m/min
  • The electric trolley travels at 1.5-11 m/min along the 3.5 m span

The slower 0.4 m/min speed is useful when positioning or aligning equipment, while the 3.4 m/min speed allows faster lifting when precision positioning is not required. For equipment installation and maintenance, having two lifting speeds gives the operator more flexibility than a single fixed-speed hoist.

The trolley and hoist are controlled through a pendant control system, keeping operation straightforward for the customer.

Why Aluminium Gantry Cranes Suit European Applications

For many European buyers, a permanent overhead crane is not always the most practical lifting solution. Maintenance teams, workshops, laboratories, cleanrooms, and equipment installation contractors often need a lifting system that can be moved, adjusted, and stored according to the job.

An aluminium gantry crane offers several advantages in these applications:
